Webster’s MA Counseling Students

Practice Therapy Skills

LEFT: Getting ready to practice their counseling skills are (from left): Giovannia Bethel; Lashelle Gray; Gene Chavez, instructor; Thereasa Jones; Jenifer Boyer; Jenell James; and April Smith.

RIGHT:  (from left) Lashelle Gray and Jenifer Boyer

Listening, conveying empathy, and reframing the focus of the conversation are important skills in developing effective therapeutic relationships. Each student in COUN 5020 Foundations of Counseling: The Helping Relationship practices these skills and then produces a 15-minute video to illustrate their mastery.

In addition, students keep a reflective journal to record their personal thoughts so they can learn to recognize their strengths and

 capabilities toward becoming counselors.

“Webster counseling students gain practical experience to help them plan their careers,” says instructor

Gene Chavez, Ed.D.

Webster’s Kansas City metropolitan campus offers two counseling emphasis areas: Professional Mental Health Counseling and Community

Counseling. It satisfies the academic requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor and for certification by the National Board of Certified Counselors.

Counseling instructors are mental health professionals who provide personal attention and a real-world approach to learning.

With more than 4,000 counseling students and alumni, Webster’s counseling program has distinguished itself as a leader in mental health education.

From the Corner Office

Notes from Dr. Carolyn Cottrell, Regional Director

Happy Spring!

Organizing your notes from the textbook can be part of your spring cleaning. Although most students know how to scan the text for highlights and key points, it is easy to get bogged down when reading for deeper understanding. The SQ3R method is a widely used, highly endorsed process of active reading.

What is SQ3R?

S = Survey. Scan the reading for chapter for what it contains. Look at major headings, charts, graphs, and review questions for an overview of the material.

Q = Question. Go back and write down questions you have about the

subject, and questions you think the material answers. Also, ask yourself what you already know about the content.

3R = Read, Recall, and Review.

Read: Read the information thoroughly. Use a highlighter to note the important material. Or take notes as you read, using the Cornell or 4 R method of taking notes  — Record, Reduce, Recall and Review. (See Spring 1, 2008 newsletter)

Recall: Once you have read the material and taken  notes (two-columns with details on the right, headings and phrases on the left), cover the right side with your hand  and see what you can remember,

using the left side as cues. Say the information aloud, so that you both read and hear the words.

Review: Once a week, go back over your text notes. Another way to review is to have a “study buddy,” a classmate with whom you can exchange notes or can discuss the main points of lecture or written material.

An essential tool in the “student sur-vival kit” is the notebook, where savvy students take useful notes, which are possible through active listening and active reading.

Have a wonderful Spring 2!
